چکیده

This paper is a phonetic study of prosody of wh-words in whquestions, yes/no-questions and echo questions in Standard Chinese. The production data from 4 speakers show that there is a prosodic difference of wh-words and the corresponding VPs between different question types. Wh-words in whquestions are the focus of sentence, whereas in yes/noquestions, VPs are the focus. The focused constituent is pitch accented so that its lexical tonal melody is retained and sometimes reinforced, while the lexical tonal melody of the corresponding unfocused constituent is compressed and sometimes reduced to a level tone. Speakers usually produce echo questions with a raised F0 register and an expanded F0 range of the wh-words to convey a meaning of surprise. However, no consistent data suggest that either duration or amplitude correlates with the focus vs. non-focus distinction.

The interrogative pronoun "shénme" (what)has different semantic functions, such as specific reference in the interrogative se...

Focus Prosody in Tokyo Japanese Wh-Questions with Lexically Unaccented Wh-Phrases

This study presents new data on prosodic effects of focus in wh-questions in Tokyo Japanese, by examining prosodic effects of focus on and after lexically unaccented compound wh-words (e.g., nani.iro ‘what.color’). The results show that the realization of post-focal reduction differs considerably depending on the accentedness of the wh-word as well as of post-wh-words. When there is an accent o...

A prosodic analysis of three types of Wh-phrases in Korean.

Wh-phrases in Korean are ambiguous due to the lexical ambiguity of "wh" words: wh-pronouns as in a wh-question, or indefinite pronouns as in a yes/no-question. Furthermore, since a wh-word in Korean is in-situ (i.e. not moved to the front of a sentence as in English), wh-questions are not distinguished from echo questions in their surface forms. In this paper, we investigated prosodic character...

Complementiser Phrase: The Case of English Wh-Embedded Clauses

English main-clause wh-questions form complementiser phrases with wh-words preposed to spec-C position. This is because English wh-words, as verb-complements originally, are strong enough to trigger wh-movement and auxiliary inversion. Persian EFL learners encounter an over-differentiation problem regarding the acquisition of auxiliary inversion rule in English standard questions. Once they hav...
